About Kermit

Kermit is a small town (population of about 200 people) in the valleys of the Appalachian Mountains. It sits on the West Viriginia side of the border between West Viriginia and Kentucky as a part of Mingo County, one of the poorest, unhealthiest and lowest academically performing counties in the state of West Virginia.

A big problem in Kermit and Appalachia in general is prescription drug abuse, although I did not knowingly witness that problem or any of its consequences while there.

Another aspect that is characteristic of Kermit and Appalachian small towns is the prominence of the coal industry. Many residents depend on the coal mines for jobs and resources.

Despite Kermit's poverty and problems, the people are very welcoming, generous and kind. They truly appreciated our help and we truly appreciated thier hospitality. In addition to the beauty of the people, the mountain landscape is breathtaking. To see some of the beauty we encountered on our trip to Kermit, visit the photos page.
